In
a race that featured seven of the top 10 ranked teams in the state
of California the St. John Bosco varsity Braves proved they belonged.
Finishing 7th overall in a race that will ultimately prove to be
stronger then next months championship races, the Braves ran strong
up front and posted the 2nd best team time in school history. The
Braves were rewarded for their strong race with a divisional sweepstakes
plaque as they were able to capture the division 2 sweepstakes
title.
Leading the way for the second race in a row was
senior Randy Skillens. The senior, who had been slowed by early
season doldrums but known for his smart racing tactics, executed
the race perfectly finishing 8th overall as he crossed the line
in 15:16 - only 3 seconds off the school record. Seniors Kevin
Urak and Luis Perez continued to be the personification of hard
work paying off. Their habit of improving continued as they both
set big personal Mt. SAC best as they crossed the line in 15:40
and 15:52 respectively. Sophomore Victor Bonilla had perhaps the
biggest breakthrough of the day as he raced to a huge personal
best overall as he crossed the line in 16:26 to place as the teams
4th man. Seniors Russell Gonzalez, Matthew Pruter and Bradley Bonilla
rounded out the varsity. Gonzalez ran a solid race as he was able
to finish as the teams 5th man to help round out their scoring.
The
lower level races had their success as well. In the junior varsity
race junior Michael Alvarez (pictured right) placed second overall
to run a solid time of 17:34. The freshman race saw a new face
take the lead as top 9th grader, as Brett McCoy ran to a time of
18:38. In the sophomore level race the team was able to place 3rd
overall behind the top 3 finish of Justin Martinez, and Timothy
Barreto. Martinez ran a strong time crossing the line at 17:20
to pace his team with a 2nd place finish overall.
The Braves next will run at Serra league finals
where they will attempt to win it's 11th consecutive league title
in a row. Stay tuned - we hope there are great things to come!
