serra league finals
The Braves were 20 points away from a 3 point
victory over Santa Margarita. Instead the 20 points the Braves
had anticipated on in the discus and 200 meters never materialized
as the Braves earned zero points in the two events and were left
to settle for the runner-up spot in league. It is the first time
since 2002 that the Braves have failed to earn at least a share
of the Serra League title.
The day was not free from bright spots however
as the Braves were able to boast four individual league titles
among the teams two senior leaders. Daniel Jenkins had a breakthrough
day in both the long and triple jumps to capture the league title
in both events. His 21 foot 3 inch long jump was good enough
to tie him for 10th all time among Bosco's elite while his 43
foot triple jump managed to place him tied for 2nd all time in
Bosco history! Senior Emiliano Uranga not only captured two league
titles, but also managed four all league medals, one of only
two Serra League athletes to accomplish that feat this year.
Uranga placed 1st in the 110 meter hurdles (15.70) and set a
personal best in the 300 meter hurdles (40.36) while also capturing
the 3rd place spot in both the long and trip jumps. Both athletes
now look to advance into CIF finals!
Other bright spots for the Braves were the runner-up
spot showing by junior Steven Caudillo in the 400 meters, and
the 4x100 meter relay of Kenneth Brown, Frank Islas, Matthew
Davis and Caudillo earning the runner-up spot after finishing
in a huge seasonal best of 43.65. Not to be outdone were a pair
of young varsity Braves who stepped up huge this day out to capture
all league spots and advance to CIF prelims. Freshman Travion
Smith leaped to a huge personal best in the high jump and he
cleared 6 feet 0.25 inches to claim the 3rd spot and a trip to
the post season. Just as impressive if not more so was sophomore
Victor Bonilla who shocked the entire league by capturing the
runner-up spot in the 3200 meter race. Bonilla improved 12 seconds
to finish in 9:40.56 to place him as the fastest sophomore Brave
in the last 20 years at that distance!
Both Junior Varsity and the Freshman-sophomore
levels were able to capture league titles this year around, so
the future looks solid for the Braves. Notable performances included
the double victory for sophomore Raymond Cruces in the 800 and
1600 meters, freshman Roland Simon claiming the top spot in the
110meter hurdles, sophomores Joey Castillo and Ruben Pereyra
capturing runner-up spots in the 100 meters and 400 meters respectively,
and junior Cory Churner capturing the junior varsity title in
the 300 meter hurdles.
Most notable of all the lower level accomplishments
was junior Nick Pardo who captured the 100 meters in a huge personal
best of 11.47 while also claiming the 200 meter race with another
best of 23.95. Pardo would also go on to lead his team in both
relays as the 4x100 relay captured the top spot and the 4x400
relay finished third. |
