Summer Camp A Big Success In Big Bear

In what can be labeled the best camp in years the The St. John Bosco cross-country team took more than a few steps forward in it's quest for league and post season glory. With a relatively low participation level this year, coaches were unsure how this group would fair in the rigorous mountains of Big Bear. What transpired was a week full or desire, effort and heart as the young inexperienced Braves opened their coaches eyes with their strong performances on the difficult runs.

Leading the way throughout the week was a quintet of harriers. Junior Victor Bonilla seemingly has picked up where he left off last track season as his workouts on the runs shined through - often challenging Braves of the past for Big Bear course record rights. Junior Tim Barreto, who recently came back from Humbolt State's cross-country camp showed a maturity and improvement yet seen up to this point in his career. He kept Bonilla honest throughout the week and was not afraid to challenge and even overtake his teammate on more then a few occasions. Junior Justin Martinez also had more then a few solid outings, while senior Mile Alvarez showed that he is going to run inspired in this, his final year of high school cross-country. Sophomore Brett McCoy was the teams breakout runner during this years camp as he established himself a a top 5 threat often challenging and beating his older counter parts many times throughout the week.

Although it is still undetermined just how this years Braves will fare against some strong challenges from the rest of the Serra league and CIF one thing is known for sure - the Braves are training like the championship teams before them as they hope to cary on the tradition that has infected the program for over 10 years.
