Braves going for TWELVE
In
some situations in life things are a given, some things are expected and
some things just happen because they are meant to be. For the past eleven
seasons the St. John Bosco cross-country program has experienced the type
of success in league that can be explained by a drive to be the best. It
is still unknown if there is some spiritual or mystical force that has
propelled the Braves to the top of league since 1994, but throughout the
school since then it has been "expected" that the Braves win
league every year. What many people fail to realize is that winning isn't
always that easy - it's not just just a "meant to be expectation"
what will always come true.
This year the expectation around campus is no different but entering the season the coaches and athletes knew better. Competing with a varsity squad that consisted of 6 new athletes the Braves realized they could take nothing for granted and at the first Serra League cluster meet they found that nothing is a given, no matter how "expected" by anyone else.
These Braves have improved by leaps and bounds since their defeat at the first league meet. These Braves also realize that although improvements have been made, they have yet to accomplish anything of note. They realize that if they want to extend the tradition of expectations and success they must defend their Serra League title for a 6th time.
Leading the team will be junior Victor Bonilla - the lone varsity returnee from last year - he has been through the battles and knows what it takes to go through a wall for his team. Backing up Bonilla will be a foursome of seasoned runners - juniors Tim Barreto, and Justin Martinez, senior Jonathan Batres and sophomore Brett McCoy. These four athletes have learned a lot in one season at the varsity level and will attempt to apply it when in their biggest test of the season. Hopefully tradition is on their side as they race to not only win for themselves, but for all the teams that came before them. Taking nothing for granted the varsity Braves will give 100% of their effort and heart - the results are yet to be determined, but may just be positive...
Serra League finals start at 1:30pm and will be held at Huntington Beach Central Park on Friday November 4. Come out and support the Braves in the quest for number 12 in the streak!
