Braves Finish Second (Again)
For
the third consecutive race the St. John Bosco cross-country team captured
the runner-up spot. This time out though, they managed a respectable placing
with out the services of their number four or five runners.
Leading the way for the team was a trio of juniors who helped lower the Braves team time. Victor Bonilla took command of his race early and after the first mile was unchallenged as he ran to a solid personal best of 15:37. Tim Barreto and Justin Martinez ran as solid back up to Bonilla as they finished fourth and fifth in the race with personal bests of 15:52 and 15:53 respectively. Helping lead the junior boys to a first place finish in their team race was Johnny Wilcox who followed the trend and also managed a solid personal best - in this his first year of cross-country - with a time of 16:37. Rounding out the top five for the Braves was a new face as sophomore Alex Theriot ran a huge personal best to finish with a time of 16:52. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that Theriot sat out a couple of days of practice this week due to a slight strain in his groin. Instead of looking for a way out, the rookie stepped up and took advantage of a "fast course."
The Braves will get a true test next week as they race a full team in the championship race of the Clovis Invitational. The Braves will make the trip to Fresno on Friday before racing on Saturday.
