2006 A Success!

Bonilla, Giles, Smith, Castellanos and Larion lead corps.

Victor BonillaWith the 4th place finish of junior Victor Bonilla at this year's CIF-Southern Section division two finals the 2006 track and field season has officially come to an end. After a sub par 2005 season the Braves rebounded nicely to capture it's fourth and final Serra league title and produced an all CIF team member in Bonilla.

Bonilla has come a long way in the past season, where he was a role player on the 3rd place State cross-country squad of 2004, to now a double All CIF runner in cross-country and track and the best junior distance runner the school has produced in the last 25 years. He set personal bests of 4:23.85 in the 1600 meters and 9:27.38 which places him 8th and 6th on the school's all time list respectively.

Dwayne GilesJunior Dwayne Giles has also come a long way. Taking a different path then Bonilla, Giles broke his foot after a very strong freshman season and never quite rebounded throughout his sophomore campaign. Setting the bar high for himself this season, Giles performed outstandingly. He captured league titles in the 400 meters and 4x100 meter relay and achieved all-serra league status in the 200 meters and 4x400 meter relay. He will be one of the fastest returning athletes in the Southern Section next season and his time of 22.39 in the 200 meters placed him 8th all time and 3rd fastest junior all time.

Sophomore Travion Smith and seniors Domingo Castellanos and Allister Larion were also strong contributors to the 2006 squad. Smith captured league titles in both the high and triple jumps, the former of which he tied for 5th on the all time list with a leap of 42-4.5. He also was league runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles and long jump. Castellanos landed in the 4th and 3rd spot in the shot put and discus respectively, while Larion threw the discus 156 feet to capture the school record.

Beyond the above mentioned underclassmen the Braves boast a number of strong athletes that will contribute to next years team. They include: Joey Castillo and Matt Hamlett in the sprints, Justin Martinez in the 800 meters, Roland Simon in the 110 meter hurdles, Miles Beal-Ampah in the high jump, Chris De La Cruz in the pole vault and Tim Pardo in a multitude of events.

2007 will be the start of the new Trinity league and the Braves expect to be a major force among the six teams competing!

Bonilla Advances to CIF Finals!

Giles and White Set Personal Bests

Junior Victor Bonilla gave the track and field squad something to cheer about as he advanced into next Saturday's CIF-Southern Section final in the 3200 meters.

Bonilla wasn't the only bright spot for the Braves at this year's CIF preliminaries. Although not qualifying both senior Randolph White and junior Dwayne Giles set personal bests on the year. White, who has come into his own on both the basketball court and track in his last year of high school finished 3rd in his heat of the 100 meters in a time of 11.35. Giles who had to step up to be one of the team's "big guns" had a fine overall day competing in four events. He set a personal best of 50.83 in the 400 meters placing third in his heat and clinched the 8th spot on the St. John Bosco all time 200 meter list finishing in a time of 22.39!

SERRA LEAGUE FINALS

St. John Bosco Track and Field - Serra League Champs!

It was fitting that the last Serra league team champion came down to the two most dominant teams in league since its inception - St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita high schools. After all they are the only two teams in league to ever hold the distinction of "Serra League Champion." It may have been more fitting had those two teams ended in a tie for a share of the championship - it happened in 2003 and 2004. Though it can be safely said that neither school wanted a tie in this the last league battle of the year and of the Serra league all together - next year with the addition of Orange Lutheran and Junipero Serra high schools the league will be known as the Trinity league.
