Braves Off On Right Track
A
well rounded and more focused squad took to the field in the Brave's season
opener. On a cool day in Corona Del Mar, the Braves rode that focus to score
a commanding win over both Corona Del Mar and Fountain Valley high schools.
And while no records were set this day out, the overall attitude of the team
shows they can be a force in the weeks to come.
Leading the team with 17 points was sophomore Travion Smith. Competing in the long, high and triple jumps, Smith scored a triple victory while finishing 3rd overall in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. Senior Steven Caudillo was a triple winner as well, racking up victories in the 4x100 relay, 400 and 200 meters. Frank Islas was the only other multi-event winner as he claimed victory in the 100 meters and 4x100 relay.
Other athletes winning their respective events included juniors Justin Martinez (800m), and Victor Bonilla (3200m), Domingo Castellanos (shot put) and the 4x400 relay team of freshman Matthew Hamlett, and juniors Dwayne Giles, joseph Castillo, and Branson Nicholson. Castillo would team with Caudillo, Islas and senior Nick Pardo to run a leg on the victorious 4x100 relay.
Perhaps the most improved and surprising athlete of the meet was sophomore Tim Pardo (pictured) as he improved his personal best in the long jump almost two and a half feet! Coming into the meet Pardo had a best of 17-4 before smashing that mark with a leap of 19-8.5!
The junior varsity level was also victorious and also stand at 2-0 for the season.
