Braves Record Second Serra League Win
As
a young squad on a quest for its first Serra league title in two years the
St. John Bosco track and field team are quickly learning what it takes to
become a team that can overcome any obstacle. In defeating the Mater Dei
Monarchs the Braves had to overcome lackluster performances from the field
events - an area which thus far has been on top of its game for the team
this season. Through the adversity the Braves found that they were just a
little bit better then their opponents as the final score ballooned into
a twenty point victory - a win that can be attributed in part to the strong
performances on the track which saw the Braves claim victory in eight of
the ten events.
Leading
the way for the Braves in commanding fashion was junior Dwayne Giles who
had a breakthrough meet as he claimed victory along with two personal bests
in the 400 and 200 meters clocking 51.18 and 22.86 respectively. Junior Victor
Bonilla complimented his sprinter counter part by also winning two individual
distance events as he was an upset winner in the 1600 meters and a run away
winner in the 3200 meters. Other double event winners for the Braves included
senior Frank Islas - who teamed with Giles and seniors Craig Williams and
Randolph White - in the 4x100 meter relay and also captured the top spot
in the 100 meters, and sophomore Travion Smith who fought off minimal but
nagging ailments to claim victory in the 300 intermediate hurdles and high
jump.
Notable performances on the lower levels came from Michael Santa-Ana in the triple jump as he set a huge personal best with a leap of 37 feet 11.75 inches, and freshman Marcus Rubio who also set a huge personal best in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 47.78.
