Braves: Catholic School Champions
(?)
It could be said that the Braves Track and Field team claimed
the title of "All California Catholic School Champions" this
past Saturday. But with a low number of teams showing up to
this first year invitational it should really only be said
that the Braves triumphed in what was more like a dual meet.
Scoring mix ups and disorganization didn't leave the Braves
with the team trophy (final results have yet to be tallied),
but many Braves still got into the spirit of competition and
came away with strong performances here:
200M: Josh Bradford claimed victory here with a powerful run
from lane one. Josh would have a stellar meet this day running
in two other events to claim victory.
400M: Joe Cowan made his individual season race debut here.
After being sidelined as what was described as a "slight
pull" in his hamstring, Cowan took over a month off of
strenuous training. Little by little he conditioned his leg
back into shape and returned here with a furry. He clocked
a school record time of 49.6 to finish the race triumphant.
800M: Braves Osvaldo Lopez, Carl Van Ness, and Mahesh Gandhi
finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.
1500M: Randy Hills, Anthony Martinez, and Daniel Estrella
swept this race.
3000M: A nice race built up here as the battle of two Salesian
schools took place. Daniel Estrella and Tony Martinez both
battled Don Bosco Tech's Mark Batres. All three runners came
through 1600 meters in a time of 4:41. Estrella could not keep
that pace however and fell off slightly. With Martinez making
chase Batres turned on a surge, creating distance between a
less experienced runner. With Batres holding on to a comfortable
lead, Martinez and Estrella were forced to settle for 2nd and
3rd places respectively.
4x100 Relay: The team of Josh Bradford, Garrett Schott, Matt
Young, and Archie Aragon got the baton around the track faster
then their competition to finish first in a seasonal PR.
4x400 Relay: The Braves debuted their "A" team for
the first time this year. Josh Bradford, Matt Young, Joe Cowan
and Garrett Schott ran an unchallenged 3:25.93 to finish well
ahead of the next team. This event would be Josh Bradford's
third win of the day making him the "unofficial" Brave
of the Meet.
Other meet highlights: The 4x200 team of Archie Aragon, Bryan
Rogers, Paul Mayans and Howard Earl took 2nd place...Earl would
be the Braves Iron Man for the meet running in 4 events...The
4x800 team of Osvaldo Lopez, Mahesh Gandhi, Emiliano Uranga,
and Carl Van Ness placed 2nd...the Braves 4x1600 team of Luis
Uribe, Mahesh Gandhi, Matt Estrella, and Patrick Pavelski took
2nd...Ian Connell placed 1st in the Discus...Pat Canez
