Braves Blaze Past Corona Del
Mar
For the second week in a row the Braves toured into Orange
County. On a windy Wednesday the Track and Field team ganged
up on a Corona Del Mar team that wasn't quite ready for the
challenge. In a "unofficial" scoring meet the Brave
prevailed 105-31. Although many of the athletes raced without
too much competition from the opposing team -times were still
impressive. A rundown of the meet is as follows:
4x100m Relay: The Braves were out strong here. Garrett
Schott had an improved start as he made up the stagger from
the onset. At the hand off Josh Bradford had the lead and was
off and running. Archie Aragon did his part to hold the lead
around the turn; Matt Young brought it home in a fine time
of 44.8.
1600m: Tony Martinez took control of the rather large
field from the gun and never looked back. His finishing time
of 4:35 was another personal best for him - the third PR in
either the 1600 or 3200 in the last three weeks.
110 Hurdles: A Corona Del Mar runner clocked 16.0 to
lead the field here. Brave Robert Zamboni took a second
place to help his team.
400m: This race was the Brave feature of the day as
three Braves needed to take place in a run off in order to
secure the final spot on the 4x400 relays. Matt Young, Archie
Aragon, and Carl Van Ness were the runners in line. From the
gun Young unleashed a furious start as Aragon and Van Ness
chased. Though sticking close, Aragon could never quite catch
a unrelenting Young as he crossed the finish line ahead of
the pack.
100m: A Brave sweep took place here as Garrett Schott took
advantage of the lower distance to record a fine time of 10.9
here. Paul Mayans and Albert Butler rounded out the top three
for their team.
800m: Distance runners Randy Hills and Daniel Estrella
tackled the shorter distance here racing to a fine pair of
clockings. Hills pushed the pace with Estrella on his shoulder;
they would cross the finish like that en route to 2:03 and
2:04 finishes.
300m Hurdles: A double winner here, the Corona Del Mar
hurdler posted a time of 43. Braves Robert Zamboni and Archie
Aragon were in pursuit.
200m: A blazing race here as two Braves dipped under
22.5 for the first time this season. Garrett Schott earned
himself the "unofficial" Brave athlete of the meet
with an official time of 22.0 over this distance. Right on
Schott's tail was Senior Josh Bradford who PR'd by over a second
to clock a time of 22.3. These two outstanding runners look
to start making waves in the weeks to come.
3200m: The winner of this race was Frosh/Soph runner
Ephraim Barrios who ran a tough race to clock a PR of 10:26;
beating out the designated Varsity runners on this day!
4x400m Relay: The return of Junior Joe Cowan to the
track came in this race. Joe, who will run anchor for the rest
of the season, ran the opening leg in a "jog" of
52.2. It was his way of proving to himself that he was ready
to go for this weekends invitational. Cowan was supported by
Carl Van Ness, Archie Aragon, and Matt Young, who once again
ran fast enough to earn himself a spot on the 4x400m.
Field Events: Jorge De La Cruz opted to sit out the rest of
his Pole Vault attempts after placing first in 12-6...Kevin
Cape took one jump of 18-11 to win the Long Jump...Gio St.
Amant finished first in the High Jump at 5'10"...Nick
Silva tossed the Shot Put 42'5" to place second...and
Ian Connell hurled the Discus 129 feet to place in the top
three. |
