CIF-SS Division II Preliminaries
The Braves Track and Field team had their best showing in
school history at Friday's CIF-SS Division II preliminaries.
Eight Braves qualified for a school record nine finals events.
Their performance puts them in a spot to claim the runner up
title at next weeks CIF-SS Finals; ironically they will battle
Serra League rival Santa Margarita for the runner up spot,
as the top spot is expected to go to Dominguez HS of Compton.
The string of success started in the 4x100m relay as the Braves
raced to a run away victory to win their heat in a time of
42.86. They had the 3rd fastest time of the day behind favorite
Dominguez and surprising Westlake. Randy Hills ran a personal
best time of 4:23.35 in the fastest overall 1600m heat to place
4th. His time and placing just squeaked him into the final
as the 9th qualifier. Josh Bradford continued his weekly improvement
in the 400m as he raced to another personal best of 49.67 to
qualify out of heat #1 into the finals. Joe Cowan and Garrett
Schott were in heat #4 together and also were qualifiers. Cowan's
heat winning time of 48.98 puts him as the 2nd seed going into
finals, while Schott ran valiantly from lane #8 to record a
personal best time of 49.74 - thus placing three Braves in
next week's finals! Cowan would have to come back shortly after
his 400m heat victory to attempt to qualify in the 300 intermediate
hurdles. Joe made it look easy, as he not only qualified into
finals but won his heat (38.90) and will be the top seed next
week! Randy Hills came back from a strong performance in the
1600m to record an even stronger one in his heat of the 3200m.
Hills ran a very comfortable aggressive style to push the pace.
With two laps to go he took the lead, and ended up finishing
in 2nd place, running well enough to qualify and record another
personal best - 9:25.19. Hills will enter next week's finals
with a #6 seed. In the final race of the night the Brave's
4x400m relay team captured victory in a run away win. The team
of Bradford, Schott, Matt Young, and Cowan powered to a comfortable
3:21.05 to earn themselves a 2nd seed going into next weeks
finals.
The field events saw Kevin Cape qualify in the Triple Jump
with a distance of 43'10". In the Pole Vault Jorge De
La Cruz will make a second straight appearance in the finals
after jumping 13'6" to advance. And much improved Senior
Ian Connell qualified into finals in the Discus with a throw
of 149'6". |
