Braves Claim Team Title at
Covina
The Braves concluded the half way point to their season with
some fine performances at this years Covina Invitational. Conditions
were optimal at Azusa Pacific University and the team ran inspired
to capture the overall team title with 83 points. It was a
bright spot to the season after performing poorly at last Saturday's
Surf City Meet. With many important meets on the horizon it
was just what many of the Braves needed to boost their confidence
to a level it will need to be at in the weeks to come.
4x100m Relay: With the absence of Joe Cowan the Braves ran
a "B" team as Archie Aragon filled in well. Matt
Young was out fast as he passed to Aragon who held his own.
Around the turn Josh Bradford made up ground and got the stick
to the last leg. Garrett Schott started off a fine day with
a superb anchor leg for his team who finished a respectable
44.22 to capture the invitational title.
1600m: This race played out great. Bosco's Randy Hills, Tony
Martinez, and Daniel Estrella were put to the test against
strong competition from Bosco Tech's Marco Alvarado and Don
Lugo's Eric Maldonado. That is how the pack remained through
two and a half laps until Maldonado and Hills broke away. All
three Brave runners PR'd here as Hills hung on for 2nd in 4:25;
Estrella and Martinez finished well in 4th and 5th places running
4:29 and 4:31 respectively.
400m: Garrett Schott would take this race out in the first
200m. Looking like he was going to win at one point he was
unable to hold on in the last 20 meters and had to settle for
second place. Nonetheless Schott ran a fine race here and earned
himself a personal best time of 50.08 making him the second
athlete within the week to break the previous school record
of 50.20!
800m: In the Freshman/Sophomore race Mahesh Gandhi claimed
victory with a fine effort as he led from start to end as he
finished in 2:03. Wanting to one up his teammate, Junior Osvaldo
Lopez ran a inspired race at the Varsity level to finish in
3rd place respectively. His time of 2:01 is a team leading
mark
200m: Josh Bradford ran 22.85 to earn 2 points for his team.
3200m: Another battle between Don Lugo and St. John Bosco
took shape here. Not surprisingly it was once again Eric Maldonado
who claimed victory. Daniel Estrella finished in 3rd place
to run a huge PR of 9:38!
4x400m: Running without Matt Young and Joe Cowan the Braves
were forced to use alternates. Once again Archie Aragon filled
in nicely as did Osvaldo Lopez on this evening. Josh Bradford
opened up with a relay PR of 50.2 to put the Braves in the
lead. Archie and Oz held on valiantly to that lead as Garrett
Schott put the field away for the victory as he also earned
himself the unofficial title of "Brave Athlete of the
Meet."
Field Events: Senior Kevin Cape jumped a seasonal best 43'6" in
the Triple Jump to capture the invitational title...Jorge De
La Cruz cleared 13'6" in the Pole Vault coming back from
an injury to his ankle he suffered in a duel meet in preseason |
