Braves Turn Heads at Mt. SAC

Sprint Medley Relay: 3:30.35 6th Fastest time in the Nation!
1600 Meter Relay: 3:17.22 5th Fastest time in the State!

It was a surprise to many watching, but only a matter of time for the Braves Relay teams to show their talent. The time was perfect at the 44th Annual Mt. Sac Invitational. This is where the Braves Sprint Medley Relay and the 4x400 teams chose to shine. Initially in the "B" sections of the relays, the Braves were moved up to both Invitational races at the last minute. In the Sprint Medley the team of Garrett Schott, Josh Bradford, Joe Cowan and Randy Hills surprised the field with their new School Record time of 3:30.35. Schott, and Bradford averaged 22.35 for their 200 legs to put the team in first place. Cowan raced through his 400 meter leg in a time of 48.1 to keep his team in first. Hills set a blistering first lap of 55.5 seconds for his 800 meter, and finished in a split of 1:57.4, but could not hold off a very strong runner from Birmingham (L.A.) who himself closed with a 1:54.

It was much of the same sort of excitement in the 4x400 relay where the Braves once again took the field by storm. The team of Bradford, Schott, Matt Young, and Cowan broke the school record by over 4 seconds to clock a fine 3:17.22. Bradford set the tone with a 49.9 opener, while Schott put the team ahead of the field with his 48.8 leg. Matt Young earned himself "Brave Athlete of the Meet" with his leg here. Running towards a 2 second PR, Young split a 50.2 to keep the team tied for first. On the anchor Joe Cowan ran a blistering pace with a 47.9 split, but could not overpower a very strong Taft (L.A.) team who's own anchor, Noah Smith, is a state finalist sprinter in his own right. Through it all though two very strong 2nd place finishes in two very high profile races make for a great future for the Braves in the weeks to come. Great Job Braves!
