Cowan Leads Braves Success
All Season long the St. John Bosco Track and Field team has
been looking for a preview of how successful a team they could
be. Starting with the April 12 Arcadia Invitational and concluding
at the Mt. SAC Relays the Braves seemed to get their answers.
The distance crew highlighted the Arcadia Invite with a 4x1600m
race that put them at the 5th position on the State list. Averaging
times of just over 4:30 the team of Anthony Martinez (4:25),
Luis Uribe (4:26), Randy Skillens (4:32), and Ephraim Barrios
(4:41) finished just shy of coach Tim McIntosh's school record
in a time of 18:02.23.
The sprints and hurdles were dominated by team leader Joe
Cowan. Finishing first in the seeded 400m race at Arcadia,
Cowan set a new school record of 48.10. His time leads the
Southern Section and ranks 3rd in the state. Joe would also
take the Invitational section at the Mt. SAC Relays shattering
his own school record to finish in a time of 37.83. His time
ranks him 2nd in the Southern Section and 3rd in the State.
The relays are another area where the Braves have come on
nicely. The Braves continued their success in the 4x100 with
a victory at the Mt. SAC relays. Their time of 43.45 was just
shy of their seasonal best of 43.18 set at their dual meet
versus Santa Margarita. The athletes contributing to the success
of the 4x100 include: Cowan, Matt Young, Roy Alugbue, Craig
Williams, and Derek Williams. The 4x400m relay hadn't been
as successful to date as it's shorter counter part, nor had
they enjoyed the success of 2002's 3:14.53 campaign, yet the
Braves refused to believe that they couldn't race to a respectable
time. Their determination came through at the Mt. SAC Relays
as they placed first in their heat. The team of Young (52.2),
Mahesh Gandhi (53.1), Thomas Geil (52.8), and Cowan (48.4)
raced to a seasonal best 3:26.80.
A welcome surprise to the Braves this season has been the
emergence of Senior Roy Alugbue's talents in the short sprints.
Known mainly for this high jumping talents, Alugbue has produced
top times in the 100m (11.02), and 200m (22.49). His times
rank him 10th on Bosco's all time track marks, and in the top
five for the year in CIF-SS Division II.
Other athletes helping the Brave's cause for a 2nd consecutive
Serra League title and a CIF title are brothers Troy and Chris
Swan who both excel greatly at at the long, triple, and high
jumps, and Kevin Roberts who has cleared a best in the pole
vault of 14'0.
The Braves will host their only home track meet of the season
when the take on Mater Dei April 29. Come support your Braves
as they continue their string of sucess! |
