Serra League Finals

A bitter ending capped off an overall successful day for the St. John Bosco Track and Field team. While some athletes came through for their team, there were others that did not perform up to the standards expected. Through the many victories and the few disappointments the 2004 Braves still walked away with a share of the Serra League title as they defeated Santa Margarita 106-102.

The biggest highlight of the meet came in the Varsity 3200 meters. The Braves, who had hoped to finish 1-4 in the event, for whatever reasons could not capture that goal. There was, however a big individual goal that was met as junior Luis Perez out distanced himself from the field to capture the individual title. He had a flawless race as he made all the right moves at the right moments in order to ensure himself the win. Perez now sets his sites on bettering his mark of 9:33 he sent in April at next weeks CIF-SS prelims.

Other Serra League champions for the Braves included: Craig Williams in the 100 meters, Luis Uribe and in the 800 and 1600 meters, and Jasen DePasquale in the Discus. Both of Uribe's wins were new Serra League records.

Runners-up for the Braves included: Matt Davis in the 100 meters, Steven Caudillo in the 400 meters, Daniel Jenkins in the triple jump, and Jon David in the pole vault.

CIF-SS qualifiers for the Braves included: the team of Ken Brown, Davis, Caudillo, and Williams in the 4x100 relay, Mahesh Gandhi in the 800 meters, Kevin Urak in the 3200 meters, and Daniel Jenkins in the long jump.

Braves who were able to crack the all time school lists included: Steven Caudillo (#10 in the 400 meters), Luis Uribe (#4 in the 1600 meters), and Jasen DePasquale (#2 in the Discus).

The Freshman-Sophomore team was not as successful as its Varsity counterpart, but they still competed well. Highlights included the team of Albert Velasquez, Joseph Easter, Vincent Herrera, and Dwayne Giles capturing the 4x100 meter relay, Velasquez winning the 400 meters, and the team of Ruben Peryera, Branson Nicholson, Herrera, and Velasquez winning the 4 x 400 meter relay.

The Braves next race in the CIF-SS Division II prelims where they will attempt to qualify for finals. Prelims takes place on Saturday May 15 at Colony High School in Ontario at 12:00pm.
