Distance Dominates, While Braves Fall Short
The always classic dual meet between the Santa Margarita Eagles
and the St. John Bosco Braves lived up to it's billing again
this year. Under clear blue skies that yielded perfect conditions
the 2004 meeting did not leave anything to be desired for track
and field purists. It did however leave a sour taste in the
mouths of those Braves that did all they could to help their
team win.
The distance squad came prepared to race. Their dominance
of the competition is what kept the team close. The 800 meters
saw senior Luis Uribe take the win in 1:57.73, senior Mahesh
Gandhi was 3rd. In the 1600 meters it was Uribe again winning
in a personal best time of 4:21.47, while the group of Randy
Skillens, Jon Batres, Kevin Urak and Luis Perez all finished
between 4:31 - 4:34 to go 1- 5. It was junior Luis Perez's
turn in the 3200 meters. Perez led a trio of Braves under 10
minutes while finishing first in a time of 9:50.02.
The bright spot for the sprints came in the 400 meters where
senior Mahesh Gandhi (50.89) and sophomore Steven Caudillo
(51.55) finished in 1st and 2nd for the Braves. It was not
enough however, as the sprint crew for whatever reason could
not hold off solid Margarita sprinters.
Bright spots for the Braves in the field included a one-two
finish by sophomore Adrian Cue and Junior Andrew Wiley in the
shot put, and junior Daniel Jenkins setting a personal best
in the long jump and winning the triple jump with another personal
record.
Among all the bright spots however the Braves still were defeated
67-69 in a meet that came down to the last race. The Junior
Varsity were also defeated, while the Frosh/Soph team ran away
with a commanding victory. |
