Braves Successful In Defeating Servite

On a very hot day the St. John Bosco athletes did what they had to in order to capture the win against the Servite Friars. The Braves did their best to first beat the heat and despite a few lackluster performances came through well and finished out their 2004 Serra League season with an overall strong day.

Junior Kenneth Brown was the only varsity track athlete to win two events, while senior Matt Kaufman captured two field events. For Brown it was his second high profile performance in as many meets. His times on Bosco's very slow track translate into very respectable times on a "fast" track. Brown's newly found attitude towards racing will be a strong attribute to his team come Serra League finals.

Kaufman took first in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 1.5 inches. His triple jump was an impressive personal record as he leaped to a spot on the bosco all time list. His mark of 41 feet 11.5 inches places him #7 all time.

When the meet was over and the scores were tabulated the Braves would win every event but two - finishing with a score of 104.5-30.5.

The freshman, sophomore level was a much more competitive dual situation. The F/S Braves were down big going into the 100 meters. Losses in that race as well as in the half mile put the Braves down by more then 20 points. The F/S athletes would not relent however as strong performances came from the throws and the 220 yard dash. Triggering the comeback would be freshman Dwayne Giles, who would run in his first 220 of the season to capture the top spot in a race where the Braves went 1-2. By the end of the meet the F/S Braves were only down by 5 points. A win in the mile relay would give the team a 65-65 tie, while a loss would gaurantee a 10 point defeat. The mile relay team of Vince Hererra, Ruben Pererya, Albert Velasquez and Giles did what they had to do and got the win and the tie for their team. Most impressive was Giles 440 split of 53.7. Giles time is a good indication that he could be ready to take the next step during the post season to help his Varsity team.

The next race for the Braves will be the Serra League Prelims held at Santa Margarita High School.
