New 800 Meter School Record
It was only a matter of time before senior, Luis Uribe would
run as fast as he knew he was capable of. Throughout the extent
of the young season his training had been flawless and his
focus unyielding. All that he needed was the right race to
run in and some strong competition. At this year's Surf City
Invitational Uribe couldn't have asked for more.
Running in a race that featured the state leader in the 800m
and a State meet finalist Uribe knew this was his chance to
prove that he could race in elite company. During the first
lap the field came through in 57 seconds. Uribe was right up
there with the leaders and made an aggressive move down the
back stretch to position himself for a top three finish and
what seemed to be a fast time.
Though unable to respond to the strong moves put on by his
two faster peers Uribe never stopped fighting and down the
homestretch actually closed ground. Upon crossing the finish
line in a very close third Uribe could sense that he had accomplished
what he set out to do. The senior runner broke the nine year
old school record of 1:55.90 to post a time of 1:54.70! It
was a fitting start to a successful day for Uribe who would
come back in the 1600 meters to take third again in a personal
best time of 4:22.90.
Two other Braves set personal bests on this day, as senior
Ryan Urak also had a successful 800 meter race to win his heat
with a time of 2:04.20, and junior Daniel Jenkins set a personal
best in the triple jump of 40 feet 5 inches. |
