braves overwhelm bishop amat
Competing
on a Monday in perfect conditions the St. John Bosco Track
and Field team traveled down the 605 freeway to take on Bishop
Amat high school in a Serra League dual meet. Although the
Braves didn't set any world records in their meet, they were
still able to more then handle a depleted Lancer team as they
took the victory 118-18. Out of 16 events that were contested
the Braves took the top spot in 14 of them. It was a solid
victory for a team that is still struggling to find its identity.
Bright
spots for the Braves came in the sprints as junior Frank Islas
easily had his best meet of the season as he ran a flawless
leg for his team on the 4x100 while also placing 3rd in the
100 and 200 meters. Freshman Travion Smith stepped into the
300 meter hurdle race for the first time and came away as his
teams 2nd best performer of the season with a 45.2 second runner-up
finish. Sophomore Victor Bonilla had a commanding victory in
the 1600 meters, leading a Bosco sweep and beating the field
by over four seconds. Double event winners included senior
Daniel Jenkins in the long and triple jumps and once again
leading the way for his team scoring 13 points was senior Emiliano
Uranga who won both hurdle races and posted a runner-up finish
in the long jump.
Both the freshman-sophomore and junior varsity
levels scored over 100 points to beat Amat. Freshman Chris
De La Cruz won the frosh-soph pole vault with a leap of 10
feet even and junior Cory Churner cranked out a huge personal
best in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.5.
Next up for the Braves will be their toughest
meet to date as they travel to the city of Anaheim to take
on the Servite Friars.
