BRAVES PROGRESS STEADY AT COVINA
Two
days after their last dual meet the St. John Bosco track and
field team tested their strength and will at this year's Covina
Invitational. As with all athletic competitions the braves
ended the day with some positives and better understanding
of things they need to work on as a team to become as good
they hope.
Once again leading the way for his team was
early season MVP candidate, senior Emiliano Uranga. Competing
in four events for the fourth consecutive meet Uranga showed
that he isn't only an MVP candidate for his team but also an
Iron Man candidate. In his 110 hurdle race Uranga looked to
be racing to a career best before a slight miscalculation at
the last hurdle prompted him to come to a complete halt and
walk over it. Despite the set back "E" still managed
to finish with a time of 17.17. Uranga would go on to triple
jump 38 feet 10 inches, take the runner up spot in the 300
hurdles and lead his team with a life time best long jump of
19 feet 8.5 inches. Other notable varsity braves showed signs
of life on this day as senior Luis
Perez ran to a fine early season mark in the 3200 meters to
place 3rd in a time of 9:37.34, senior Kevin Urak pulling double
duty to finish with times of 2:03.87 and 4:29.40 in the 800
and 1600 meters respectively, and sophomore Victor Bonilla
racing to a personal best in the 3200 meters with a time of
10:01.60. Although no brave performed stellar on this day,
the braves were solid enough in their events to bring home
a 3rd place varsity team trophy.
The freshman-sophomore level once again saw
the emergence of freshman Travion Smith. "TRAE" has
set personal records in the long jump (19-1) and triple jump
(38-5) in consecutive meets. After scratching all of his long
jumps and missing his marks in the triple jump, Smith took
out his frustrations on the high jump as he leaped to a height
of 5 feet 10 inches. Other bright spots for the frosh/soph
team were sophomore Joey Castillo's 55.15 in the 400 meters,
sophomore Raymond Cruces' 4:48.40 in the 1600 meters and freshman
Tyree Toomer's 53.6 split in the f/s 4x400 meter relay.
