another classic showdown leaves braves just
short of victory
Every
sport has it's rivalry. No matter the level of competition
there is always that one team that is synonymous with their
opponent. In the Serra League for boys track and field the
St. John Bosco Braves and Santa Margarita Eagles are those
two teams. They are the only two teams to ever win Serra League
track titles and for the past 2 seasons have been co-champions
of the league. It was the same this year as the past two years
as the Eagles got the best of the Braves in their annual dual
meet. The Braves now hope that once again they have what it
takes to defeat the Eagles at the Serra League finals.
It is almost hard to be disappointed after
such strong performances by the Braves, but there were those
seniors that gave it their all and wanted so badly to win an
out right league title in this, their last year of high school
track and field. One such senior was Emiliano Uranga who once
again performed superbly for his team. He set personal best
times in both hurdles races (15.52 and 40.84 respectively)
to capture the win in both events. Kevin Urak was another senior
who had a breakthrough for his team winning the 800 meters
in a time of 2:01.94. Senior Daniel Jenkins lead the way in
the horizontal jumps as he captured first place in both and
senior Kenneth Brown secured runner-up spots in both the 100
and 200 meters while establishing personal records and coming
through when his team needed the points. Other breakthrough
performances for the Braves included the 4x100 meter relay
of Brown, Frank Islas, Matthew Davis and Steven Caudillo running
to a huge seasonal best time of 43.99, junior Domingo Castellanos
earning a personal best in the shot put with a winning throw
of 46-4, sophomore Joseph Easter earning a personal best in
the discus with a winning toss of 141-2, and freshman Travion
Smith earning personal bests in the long jump (20 feet 6.5
inches to take 2nd) and the 300 hurdles (43.90 to take third).
The freshman-sophomore level dominated the
Eagles this year around and ended their league dual meets undefeated.
Bright spots for the team were freshmen Tyree Toomer's 11.87
in winning his first 100 meters of the year and Chris De La
Cruz clearing 11 feet even to win the pole vault. Sophomore
Justin Martinez also set a personal best in the 1600 meters
of 4:42.10 in winning the race. The Junior Varsity level pulled
out a narrow victory over the Eagles - edging them by one point!
