triple threat in the triple jump leads braves
to victory
Down
by one point to the Mater Dei Monarchs with more then 80% of
the meet complete the Braves hoped for big things from their
triple jumpers. The 200 meters was given to the Monarchs when
race favorite Kenneth Brown fell out of his blocks and was
disqualified. Mater Dei took first and second place in the
race and with that finish moved ahead of the Braves. That is
when the triple jumpers took over. After realizing that it
was up to them to win the meet they all went on to jump their
best marks of the day to put the braves back up by eight points.
Leading the trio was senior Emiliano Uranga
who almost earned himself a perfect meet racking up 18 of a
possible 20 points for his team. "E" won the 110
high hurdles with a personal best time of 15.9 seconds, cruised
to victory in the 300 intermediate hurdles and took 2nd in
the long jump with a personal best jump of 19 feet 11.5 inches.
But it was in the triple jump where Uranga would set a personal
best of over a foot as he took the lead with his jump of 41
feet 4 inches. Teaming up with Uranga to help seal the meet
for their team were senior Daniel Jenkins and freshman Travion
Smith. Jenkins would help his team pull out a win in the 4x100
meter relay as he filled in this week as the anchor leg. He
would go on to score a third place in the long jump and leaped
out to a distance of 40 feet 4 inches in the triple jump. Smith,
would win the high jump for his team with a leap of 5 feet
6 inches and then move on to the triple jump where he would
set a personal best of almost 2 feet as he leaped to a mark
of 40 feet 3.5 inches.
Other notable performances for the Braves
were sophomore Joseph Easter's first place finish in the discus
throw in his first varsity meet as a thrower, junior Steven
Caudillo coming back from a slight injury to win the 400 meters
in a time of 51.70, and senior Luis Perez putting the finishing
touches on the meet in the 3200 meters for the Braves as he
accounted for the 5 first place points the Braves needed after
the triple jumpers completed their sweep to clinch the meet.
Notable performances on the freshman-sophomore
level came from sophomore Joey Castillo as he moved down a
distance to win the 100 and 200 meters in 11.95 and 24.00 seconds
respectively. Castillo would go on to win his third event of
the day as he teamed with sophomores Ruben Pereyra, Thomas
McVey and Branson Nicholson to win the 4x400 meter relay in
a time of 3:43.
Next up for the Braves will be an away meet
versus the Bishop Amat Lancers at Bishop Amat Memorial High
school. The meet will be Wednesday March 23 at 3:00PM.
