serra league preliminaries
The
St. John Bosco track and field team did their best to qualify
for this year's Serra League finals. The result saw a multitude
of solid performances, a handful of personal records and a
few event leaders.
The lower level field events competed in their
final meet of the season. Earning league champion status were
sophomore Charles Diaz in the shot put and junior David Aguilar
in the discus. Sophomore Justin Martinez also captured the
league title as he led a contingent of five Braves to a sweep
in the frosh-soph 3200 meter final. Other frosh-soph and junior
varsity athletes earning all league status included Michael
Alvarez (JV 3200m), Kane Mejia (JV pole vault), John Woscek
(JV Triple Jump), Robert Yarbrough (JV shot put and discus),
Tim Barreto (FS 3200m), Raymond Cruces (3200m), and Tim Pardo
(FS long jump).
Senior Emiliano Uranga who has lead his team
all season will do so once again as the leading qualifier in
both hurdle races as well as a top 3 seed in both the long
and triple jumps. Senior Kenneth Brown set a huge personal
best in the 200 meters (22.87) to qualify in the 3rd spot,
while senior Kevin Urak qualified in both the 800 and 1600
meters after solid efforts. Other qualifiers for the Braves
expected to compete for an all league spot include junior Steven
Caudillo (400m), freshman Travion Smith (long jump, triple
jump, high jump and 300m hurdles), senior Luis Perez (3200m),
and the 4x100 meter relay team of Brown, Frank Islas, Matthew
Davis, and Caudillo.
The field events will have an important role
at the Serra League finals as they hope to gain enough points
to elevate their team to the top spot. Athletes with top marks
in their respective events include Daniel Jenkins (long and
triple jumps), and the throws group of Domingo Castellanos,
Andrew Wiley, Joseph Easter and Allistar Larion. Jenkins and
Larion are the leading qualifiers in the triple jump and discus
throw respectively. |
