2005 TRACK AND FIELD AROUND THE
CORNER!
The
2005 version of the St. John Bosco Track and Field team will
be looking to build upon the success it's had this decade as
they go for an unprecedented 4th Serra League title in a row.
Standing in their way once again will be the Eagles of Santa
Margarita, who along with the Braves have proved to be the
top of the league since it's inception in 1999. The Eagles
won the first three league titles from 1999-2001 until the
Braves of 2002 put an end to their reign. In 2003 and 2004
it would be both schools putting on a show for the league as
Margarita would take the dual meet competition from the Braves
while Bosco returned the favor at league finals to allow both
schools to be co-champions of the league. This year the Braves
once again hope to be outright champions of the league as a
number of top performers return to help set the tone.
The distance crew will be led by the senior
trio of Luis Perez, Kevin Urak and Randy Skillens. Coming off
a 3rd place finish at the state level in cross-country these
three individuals have established themselves as one of the
premiere trios in California. Their talents will be looked
upon to tackle the middle and longer distances. Perez is the
defending 3200 meter league champion. Sophomores Victor Bonilla
and Justin Martinez will attempting to crack into the varsity
ranks and score points after strong freshman campaigns.
The
sprinters of 2005 will return most of the top athletes from
a year ago. As young, inexperienced varsity runners in 2004,
the squad looks to build upon the success they acquired last
season. Leading the way for the team will be senior captains
Matthew Davis (100, 200, relays), Kenneth Brown (200, 400,
relays) and Emiliano Uranga (hurdles). Davis and Brown are
returning all-league sprinters, while Uranga was the top returning
hurdler heading into his junior season before a season ending
injury prevented him from competing. Leading the longer sprints
will be a slew of up and coming runners. Junior Steven Caudillo
is the top returnee in league in the 400 meters with a career
best of 50.67. Frank Islas and Branson Nicholson are looking
to have breakthrough seasons after notable rookie seasons as
well as strong preseason conditioning programs.
Field events will look to senior captain Daniel
Jenkins in the jumps and a slew of returning weight throwers
that include seniors Andrew Wiley, and Gabe Velez along with
juniors Adrian Cue, Allister Larian and Domingo Castellanos
- who will also double in the jumping events!
