teamwork gets the job done versus servite
Down
35-5 early on in the competition Head track and field coach
Tim McIntosh proclaimed that it would take a miracle to beat
the Servite Friars. The Braves had just beat Servite in the
4x100 meter relay, but were disqualified for passing out of
the zone. The Braves where then beat in the 1600 meters 8-1,
and could only earn 4 points in the high jump while the Friars
earned the 5 points for the win. It seemed as if all day that
the Braves were playing catch up. The Braves would get the
win in the 110 meter hurdles, but then lost the 400 meters,
100 meters and 800 meters - an event in which they would lose
8-1. Little by little though the Braves kept their composure
and kept themselves in the meet by taking the always important
second and third places - always creeping up on an unsuspecting
Friar team who seemed to have the meet well in hand.
It was the 200 meters in which the Braves
had a pleasant surprise after Kenneth Brown and Steven Caudillo
finished 1st and 2nd to win the event 8-1. Then came the Braves
specialties - the discus and the triple jump. The Braves had
already gone 1st and 2nd in the shot put, but they knew they
had to step it up in the discus to have a shot at winning the
meet. The trio of Allister Larian, Joseph Easter and Andrew
Wiley did just that - sweeping the discus event 9-0. Next up
the triple jumpers - after sweeping the long jump - once again
had their chance to shine - and shine they did. The trio of
Daniel Jenkins, Emiliano Uranga and freshman Travion Smith
all set personal bests to capture the 9-0 win in the event.
All the Braves needed to do was capture four more points to
clinch the meet. Luis Perez and Victor Bonilla did just what
their team needed in the 3200 meters as they took 2nd and 3rd
to earn the four points as the Braves pulled off a huge come
from behind victory to beat the Friars 70-61. A total team
effort all around accomplished the "miracle" it was
going to take to win thus leaving the Braves undefeated in
league leading into the biggest show down of the year with
co-first place team Santa Margarita. |
